...especially at a time when Islam is making inroads into Europe? Wouldn't you want to protect your culture and identity? Does the right of people to live in a distinct community outweigh the rights of people (with different customs and mores) to live wherever they choose? In short, to what extent should we welcome or reject Globalization? Is it beneficial, and for whom is it beneficial? To what extent must we all conform and be the same?

That's a very good point: Does Swiss identity lie at the canton level or at the national level--it's like asking how loyal you are to your local community as opposed to your state government which is concerned with health care and education--should the state intercede within the canton, or should the canton protect you from the intercession of the state? I'm sure the Swiss have worked these matters out sufficiently for their needs and know what's good for them!

You may not feel all that strongly about your Swiss identity, but apparently others there in Switzerland do...then again you've admitted as much; otherwise, you'd already have applied for your Swiss nationality. England on the other hand seems to feel that Switzerland belongs in the EU, but forcing immigration on Switzerland is NOT the way to achieve this! One reason d'etre for the EU is to keep itself "DISTINCT from Islam," which I believe is as good a reason as any for being a Community, though identity should be based on what unifies people rather than trying to keep others out--unless, those "others" have it as their intention to try and alter your community and the values its members share! The trick is to be able to recognize those in your community -- how many of us can even recognize our own neighbors? It's difficult for a country to be both prosperous and its inhabitants neighborly towards one another...if somebody is critical..., let them show better!
