Hi, its been a while since used xp and msn messenger but as I remember if you open up messenger, then go to the menu bar at the top, go to "tools" I think then "options", if its not under tools check the others "file", "edit" etc, and under the general tab uncheck the box where it say open messenger at startup or start messenger (something similar as I said it was a while ago since using xp). If its not under the general tab it will be somewhere in the options so just go through each tab.
Sorry I couldn't be more specific but I hope you get the an answer that will help you

Open messenger and go to Tools then Options. There is a check box that needs to be un-checked. It allows Messenger to start when windows starts.

It's in the messenger options:
Open the program, open the options and you'll find a checkbox to disable the popup under the general settings tab.

Follow these exact instructions:
1. Press [window key]--which looks like the windows symbol in between [ctrl] and [alt] at the same time as [R] that is [window]+[R] which will give you the short cut to run.
2. Type in the box msconfig
3. Go to the Start Up tab (the last one to the right).
4. Select "msnmsgr"= that is uncheck that box.
If that doesn't work e-mail me back.

Their is a program that will remove MSN messenger completely off your PC, I have a copy lurking about and you can simply search for a tool yourself, so search for it.
M$ will tell you that it is a vital component of outlook but my outlook works perfectly fine without it... pure bull on Microsoft's part.

In MSN in the preferences tab there should be a box saying "run on startup" or words to that effect. Just unclick it.

Assuming you use Windows XP and it's installed to your first hard drive (usually C) here goes.
Open My Computer
Open the C drive (or your main hard drive)
Open Program Files
Scroll down to where you see the folder named 'Messenger'
Right Click it and choose 'RENAME'
Name it whatever you want, I use 'Messenger OFF'
Enjoy, you'll never see it again!
