Actually yes! Vaginitis is just a generic term for inflammation of the vagina. Depending on the organism, you can have similar symptoms but different causes of vaginitis. Thrush, gonorrhoea, herpes, chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis and trich are all causes of vaginitis. Some are STD, some are not. Bacterial vaginosis causes the fishy odor you were describing.

yes it does and that's a way to diagnose vaginitis ! The smell is accenuated if an alkali, KOH, is added to body secretions.
