Although Phil drinking again is not a very nice and watchable story line, especially with Ben drinking the vodka, I think it is very realistic and true to life.
I agree with some of the other answers, Phil just wanted to be a good dad to Ben, and he felt he let Ben down because of the situation with Stella and what she subjected Ben to. As he was a recovering alcoholic, this tipped him over the edge and he turned to drink again to try to deal with it. This type of story happening in real life would affect anyone really badly, let alone an alcoholic.
I think the story line that is silly and unrealistic at the moment is the Ian and Cindy story line!!

I think it is being portrayed very well. If an alcoholic falls off the wagon -it's usually not just one drink ,it's a sly build up and secrecy. Yes, this would happen and so MIGHT the bit with Ben and the Vodka -it would be all too easy when they live in a pub and of course, he wants to be like his dad

I don't think it is a dull storyline because that is how easy it can be for ex-alcoholics to fall off the wagon when something really bad happens. It was an awful thing that happened to both Ben and Phil and I think it would of been even more boring and unrealistic if they had just pretended that nothing had happened.

Peggy is trying to sort it herself in the way she thinks she knows best rather than admit that he needs professional help. I did find the storyline a bit far fetched though when he pinned his mother against the wall - ok that probably would happen in real life, but Peggy the character would not have stood for that and would have chucked him out - period. Not sure either that Ben would have drunk alcohol after seeing his father the way he is.

Think that storyline is okay. Writers are trying to be realistic. Something like guilt over Stella, delayed reaction would cause an addict to return to the bottle and despite being sorry after each incident and they really mean to stop temptation gets too much for them. At this point I don't think it's dragging on too long.

I agree,to be honest with you my opinion of Eastenders has gone down, but anyway I find it annoying and pretty silly,I mean I thought he went away to sort himself out,and Iam sure the real Phill Mitchell would never act like that and treat Peggy the way he did,and I don't like the idea of Ben drinking because he saw his dad doing it,I find it pretty silly,I don't think this is how it should be portrayed.

its only been a few weeks, whats wrong ith you, and they trying to portray how abuse affects families as well as the victim. phill loves ben so much and wanted to do nothing but be a good dad and in his eyes he has failed, and something like that is enough to send any recovering alcoholic over the edge, and thats what they are trying to show. what did u think was gonna happen? did u think phill was gonna sort stella out and then everything would go back to being happy families? come on, it dont happen in real life so why soaps? and phill comes off the frink next week anyway, so u will be happy, he omes back and is off the drink after seeing ben drink his vodka cos he anted to forget shocks phill into giving up ok

I don't think it's dragging on because in real life abuse and a problem like this can go on for a very long time so I guess they are trying to make it as realisitic as possible.

to be honest we have seen it all before, surely we must be due a stabbing on the square or another wedding for pat or peggy, the circle of life - eastenders style.
