In which field should I major if I want to design consumer electronics and/ or automobiles?

Edit: I would like to design the final outer appearance of the product.

I was thinking that I would need to major in Industrial Design...am I thinking about the wrong thing?

That depends on what level of design you are interested in. If you want to design the product's final appearance, a major in design would be best, or art if design is not offered. If you want to design a product from the wires up, you will need an engineering degree (automotive or electrical engineering sound like what you should look into).
