Jesus Christ. Are we at that part of the year again when this question will be asked 8,000 times in the next month.

If so, listen up. Cut and paste this answer for all the other questions.

In 1903, the National League, which had been in existance for almost 30 years, agreed to have their league champion play the winner of the American League, which had been in existance for 3 years. The two leagues agreed that their champions would play a best of 9 games series to determine the "true champion". However, at the time, fans were very loyal to the league of their home town team. To draw interest from the fans, the commissioners of the leagues decided to market the series as the "World's Series", even though the two teams (Pittsburgh, Boston) were only separated by 500 miles. They saw it as a way to make money, and they didn't want their fans to think it was just an exhibition. So they declared that it would determine the "Champion of the World".

Obviously, the name stuck.

It was just marketing.

edit: BTW, I'm just blown away by people who answer questions like this thinking they know something about the topic when they clearly have no clue. All you would have to do is spend 10 second typing in "History of the World Series" into a search engine and then clicking the Wikipedia link.

Like I said before, it was a marketing slogan for the most popular sport in the country at the time.

EDIT: Seriously, "ben t", this is the honest and true answer. I guess I got the thumbs down for being condescending. Wouldn't be the first time. Morons. ;)

It's a matter of short sighted history. Baseball was invented in the U.S. by Abner Doubleday. At the time the World Series was started, baseball was only played in the U.S. so the winner was the world champion by default. When international leagues come into existence, they will probably have a Galactic Series until we start playing baseball on other planets.

It’s just a name. It has appeal as the ultimate baseball event of the year and has become traditional because the use of the term has been in existence for over a century.

The American League champion is playing the National League champion so what acceptable name could you suggest at this point?

It may confuse and even irritate people from other countries but I think you should consider the history, the tradition and the meaning from the fans’ point of view.

It made for a more dramatic and grand sounding name.

It has nothing to do with the fact that players come here from other countries - since it's been called he "World Series" since 1903, and players from outside the U.S. weren't coming here with any regularity until much later.

Also, until 1920 (Japan,) the only professional baseball leagues were found in America. Thus, it was recognized that the best teams in the world were found here.

Because it was founded in 1903 when the greatest players were from the United States. It was the first year when the American League went up against the National League.
Major League Baseball is still the best Baseball league in the entire world.

Because the world seemed a lot smaller in the 1900's and "World Series" was a good sound bite.

Much as I love sports in America, the World Championship titles in US pro sports all need to go away (exception, wrestling). The league's titles should speak for themselves, we don't need whiny athletes preening as so-called World Champions.

World Cup is a true World Championship. Baseball? Heck, Japan was World Champion last year, should the Japan League champion be named World Champions instead of the Cardinals?

Lunacy. Just lose the "world" in US pro championships.

Because we let all the people all over the world play here, therefor we have the best of the best in the world on our teams. That makes it a world series.
