I suppose to define "Slavery", one has to have an idea of what "Freedom" is. Actions that could be considered truly "Free" would be those that have no outside coercion affecting one's decisions to make them.
By this logic, we are slaves to many things; outside sources of oppression, internal conflicts and desires, and pressures from the world around us. To be truly free could merely be a fragment of a dream; an ideal fantasy that can never be obtained.
However, does this particular brand of "Slavery" have to be considered such a good thing? Having obligations to oneself and to others is not necessarily a horrible thing to have. Altruism, hardwired into the human psyche from years and years of evolution and societal programming, is merely a form of an animal's desire to care for those around itself, whether the sole intention is completely known: To preserve genetic lines for a more diverse selection for the species to have, allowing a maximization of kin selection.
Of course "Modern" society may pretend to have more of a stranglehold on our freedoms than our biological components, but considering that our masters are merely puppets and pawns of their own cravings, desires, heritage, and brain chemistry, it's laughable to believe that they would have any greater control over us with television, finances, religion and sin.

Slavery still exists....but so does freedom. Anything that restricts a person's ability to get that which would allow the best possible outcome is slavery.
Prostitution, addiction in any form, child labor are of course forms of slavery. Then there other fetters we choose to take upon ourselves. Marriage, children, employment are among these. Although these things can be very good, they may also be very bad.
There is always the spiritual way of looking at it....Mankind is free to make a choice but one must be made.....To be a slave to evil, or to be a slave to good.

Slavery seems to persist in the forms it took before it was outlawed. In the US agricultural peonage (debt slavery) seems to be the commonest form of slavery. In Japan sex slavery is the commonest form of slavery. In western Europe and the Middle East slaves are still kept as domestic servants despite laws to the contrary. Slavery can more easily be outlawed than abolished, and it seems to continue in different societies along the lines it was practiced when legal.

Slavery in our modern society is generally outsourced to third world countries, like the Ivory Coast in Africa.
So we can make money off of it without having to see it.

We are enslaved to our jobs, governments and religions. Anything that restricts your freedom to act in a way that you desire (within reason of course) is a form of slavery.
