In my opinion Steve Young and Joe Montana are the top two QB's of all time in the NFL. Ahead of all others. Even if this Smith kid would have a few excellent years behind him you could not start with the comparisons. This can only be done after 10+ years of excellence.
San Francisco had one hell of a system out there back in the Montana/Young days. Mike Holmgren must have learned a great deal from being with them also. When he was the coach here with Green Bay I'm sure he had a big role in getting Favre here. Also bringing in Matt Hasselback and Mark Brunell both great QBs he had a hand in. I happen to think that if it weren't for Mike Holmgrens guidance Brett Favre would never have been as great as he became.

Yeah I'm with everyone else. I mean these pasty faced qb's like Alex Smith, Eli Manning really don't pump my nadds. I've seen their game, and i'm not jazzed up about their play. Now u want to put A Smith in the conversation w/Montana & Young? No way, that would be a typo. A Smith has a long ways to go.

Whoa, you're taking quite a leap of faith there, my friend. Young Mr. Smith has TONS more to prove before he shares anything with the other two QBs other than the fact that they all played for SF.
So if I were you, I'd avoid comparing Smith to those two greats in public until he shows us more production. But I'm not you so you can do whatever you want, I'm just trying to help.

The big difference is that Montana and Young were picked out by the legendary Bill Walsh, who clearly throughout his coaching career had an eye for picking out great talent. Smith was plucked out by Mike Nolan, who, while he is a decent coach, his legacy has yet to proven.
I think it's too early to make that transition until Smith actually proves himself in the NFL. While he is a decent quarterback, he has yet to have a breakout season. Until he does so he shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath with legends like Montana and Young.

Do you hate Montana and Young? What an insult. Smith is not fit to carry their jocks. Heart and work ethic are great to have, but they won't make up for his lack of talent.

I don't think he'll ever be as good as Montana or Young. But didn't Grbac and Garcia make a few Pro Bowls in the 49ers system? He definately has the potential for that much.

Alex Smith has a weak throwing arm..also i do not think he could pull off that stunt he did against arizona against a team such as the bears... i think he will be a david carr kind of deal...he will be a bench warmer within 5 years...

No. Not even Jeff Garcia. I think Alex Smith's ceiling is a Brad Johnson-type career.

No way dont even put his name next to them. He is probably one of the worst first picks ever.
