Both the Australia Emu and the African Ostrich are large flightless birds, but I think the Ostrich is the larger of the two.

Titanis Walleri. This bird is known from the early Pleistocene (Ice Age) of Florida. It is the last known member of the family Phorusrhacidae, a group of large, flightless birds which evolved in South America. This creature had an estimated body height of 3 meters (if it stood fully erect, and 2.5 meters in more normal situations). Titanis really had arms instead of wings.
The Elephant Bird is thought to have been the inspiration for the Roc (or Ruhk) made famous in the stories of Sinbad and the accounts of Marco Polo. While Aepyornis was by no means as large and terrible as the elephant-eating Roc, it WAS one of the largest birds that ever lived. The flightless bird grew to around ten or eleven feet tall, and is estimated to have weighed up to 1100 pounds. By comparison, a BIG Ostrich will go eight feet and 300 pounds. The home of the Elephant Bird was the island of Madagascar, off the eastern coast of Africa.

The ostrich is the largest and heaviest bird. It is also the fastest-running bird; it can run up to 43 mph (70 kph). It can outrun most predators, but can also kick to protect itself. Ostriches cannot fly. They have a life span of up to 40 years in captivity.
Anatomy: The ostrich can grow up to 9 feet (2.7 m) tall and weighs up to 345 pounds (156 kg). The ostrich also has the biggest eyeballs of any bird; they are 2 inches (5 cm) across.
Eggs: The ostrich lays the biggest egg in the world; ostrich eggs are 4.5 x 7 inches (11 x 18 cm) across and weigh 3 pounds (1400 g).
Habitat: This bird is native to the dry savannas of Africa and are well adapted to desert life. Ostriches get water from the plants they eat.
Diet: Ostriches eat mostly plants, but also eat insects, fruits, seeds, nuts, and some small animals (like lizards).
