Most of the 60s boybands had members who played instruments. If they were well-known but sang to a backup band they were just called singing groups.
ex. The Beatles - a band
The Temptations - a singing group

In the 60's, boy bands were comprised of guys who could sing, and play their own instruments. A lot of them even wrote their own music. Looks were not an issue, and the music came first.

Nowadays because of MTV, and because image is so important in marketing, boybands are put together via talent searches and scouting (O-Town, etc.). Looks are the most important thing, and the music comes second.
