I hear songs on videos and the radio and did my own research.
the oddest way I ever got introduced to an album was in 1982 when my car broke down and I got a ride. The Montana water skiing friends were listening to a band called Louisiana's LeRoux, and the album Up! turned out to be just wonderful. Took me 20 years to find a CD for it but I have it.

I grew up in a Country & Western house (especially Johnny Cash, my dad really liked him). Then one day while visiting relatives (I was 12), my older cousins played "Electric Funeral" (Black Sabbath) and I was hooked! A few years later, a buddy in High School and I would frequent a particular record store because they carried imports and pretty much anything not mainstream. We discovered a LOT of great music. He discovered Iron Maiden. I discovered Judas Priest (because they had a really cool album cover of all things on "Stained Class"). The Beatles I heard on the radio; the Rolling Stones, as well. Some Zeppelin, Who, Deep Purple from the radio led to buying albums. But mostly it was my buddy and I hanging out at that one record store.

VH1, hehe.
There was a show on that channel called Greatest Songs from the 80's or something like that. I don't usually watch much TV but I was really bored that day so I watched it.
Some time through the show, i saw a fellow plugging his guitar cable thingy into his amp, and playing a riff that i thought was just incredible, then the rest of the instruments came in and i stared at the screen like..wow.
Later on in the same song, the same brilliant riff man [who I'd later find out was Slash] played his extraordinary solo and at that moment my "mild" obsession with Guns N' Roses was born.
I made it sound so dramatic, hehe.

My mom was mainly into Foreigner, Journey, that sort of thing. So I started out with those, and found my own favorites from there by way of the radio and friends.
The Beatles, man. That's real music.

Elvis was just always around. You heard the name Elvis anywhere.
The Stray Cats? I remember all those 80s compilation commercials and Rock this town was on one.
Bauhaus? Internet. I was looking up goth bands.
Misfits? In junior high, you always saw people sporting Misfits stuff, and so yeah.

i found out about Muse from a book called twilight.
The author was in love with them and she had this playlist of songs that helped her to write her books. I heard one song from them and i was blown away. yea.... pretty weird place to find out about a band.
The other ones are from the radio and beatles from my dad, of course.
Some I just find from the internet from pure boredom
hehe yea

Journey my mom used to listen to when I was growing up and Breaking Benjamin, I'd heard some of their older songs before on the radio. Then a friend of mine had their newer ones on a cd he listened to and my obsession with BB was born.

Some websites like last.fm, and certain friends.
last.fm is an amazing site and has introduced me to a good number of bands.
Kaizers Orchestra I found through a friend wanting to know what language they were singing it.
