Any distinction would be great- especially if you could throw in things like drive, boulevard, road and-my personal favourite- mews.

I get cul-de-sac, but after that it's a write off.

Street:

A thoroughfare especially in a city, town, or village that is wider than an alley or lane and that usually includes sidewalks and usually reserved for use by cars.

Avenue:

The principal walk or driveway to a house situated off a main road or a broad passageway bordered by trees.

It depends on the city but streets all run in one direction and avenues run in the opposite direction. In Tampa for example streets all run North-South while avenues all run East-West. Once you get into the suburbs its a crap-shoot. The names don't mean anything its just whatever sounds best.

an avenue is a roadway that leads to something important such as a park usually lined w/ trees while a street is a road built on low density housing where traffic is minimal
