The word aneroid means "without liquid".If the atmospheric pressure is allowed to act on a flexible box,the walls of the box would respond to the changes in the atmospheric pressure by setting in deformations. This principle is utilised in the construction of aneroid barometers.
The sensitive element in this case is a partially exhausted disc-shaped metal box called aneroid cell(or aneroid capsule) made of copper and beryllium, which undergoes changes of shape resulting from variations of pressure of the external air.The ends of the box are usually corrugated to give greater flexibility.A central spring prevents complete collapse of the box under the external pressure. At any given time, there will be an equilibrium between the force due to the spring and that of the external pressure. The small movements of the box are transmitted by a system of magnifying levers to the pointer moving over a graduated dial which will indicate the air pressure.

What Is An Aneroid Barometer

An aneroid barometer uses a small, flexible metal box called an aneroid cell. This aneroid capsule(cell) is made from an alloy of beryllium and copper.[2] The evacuated capsule (or more usually capsules) is prevented from collapsing by a strong spring. Small changes in external air pressure cause the cell to expand or contract. This expansion and contraction drives mechanical levers such that the tiny movements of the capsule are amplified and displayed on the face of the aneroid barometer. Many models include a manually set needle which is used to mark the current measurement so a change can be seen. In addition, the mechanism is made deliberately 'stiff' so that tapping the barometer reveals whether the pressure is rising or falling as the pointer moves.

Choice C is correct -- virtually by definition! "The aneroid barometer consists of a flexible metal box, which is made from an alloy of copper, and beryllium....A mercury barometer consists of a tube, which is closed at one end, and a beaker." There are other differences between these two types of barometer: "• Aneroid barometer is a solid device, which is easy to transport and take readings, whereas, the mercury barometer is very hard to transport. • The mercury barometer can be constructed easily, but the aneroid barometer requires machinery. • The mercury barometer is a very large and fragile apparatus while the aneroid barometer is a compact and stable device." A barometer which does not use any liquid it consists of an evacuated metal box containing a system of lever and a pointer it is used as an indicator of the nature of weather but does not given accurate pressure reading.
