A prefix is a short word used in fromt of another word to modify it's meaning. In Science they are frequently used to vary the basic unit measured. For example, kilogram. A kilogram is 1000 grams and the metric prefix kilo means 1000. A kilometer is 1000 meters.

Like the above answerer said, a prefix is an addition to the beginning of a word used to modify the word's meaning. In science, they are most often used to modify units. For instance, a meter is 100 *centi*meters, which themselves are 10 *milli*meters. 1 gram is 1/1000 of a *kilo*gram.

Other prefixes can be used to. Something like, *a*typical means not typical. There are loads and loads of prefixes used in science.
