You could also take it as when you are playing the guitar or in a group that is good! " YOU ROCK! "

You can simply say it's like saying "You're amazing!"
but if you'd like to explain why we say that:
"you rock" is generally comparing someone to a rock band, who goes up onstage and "rocks" - they play real loud, sing real well and are thought to be really just plain cool.
so, if YOU rock, then you're just so freaking cool and are just amazing at...whatever it is you rock at.
