I didn't understand that movie and never really did figure out who the mole was or why everyone died! Anyone care to explain?

There were two moles. The mole inside the mafia was DiCaprio, who was an undercover cop. The mole inside the police station was Damon, who was also a cop (a detective) but served as the inside man to Jack Nicholson. Turns out that both Damon and DiCaprio uncovered each other as the moles. The mess was so deep on both sides (neither the cops nor the mafia knew how many people were definitely involved) that both sides started killing everyone who they thought could rat them out or catch on to them.

Ok people answering the question that have the nerve to say he is a mole are completely dumb, and apparently have no clue what was going on in the movie. NO Dignam was not a mole, for the love of god. He is the only one in the whole movie that didn't trust Sullivan the entire movie. If you actually pay attention to the movie, and watch how Dignam acts around Sullivan, you will see from what he says and what he does that he knows Sullivan is the rat. He is pissed, and he was on leave when he shot him, because he before then tried to get him to admit that he was the rat, and that is why Sullivan's last words were "ok, ok" because of the many attempts before that made by Dignam to get Sullivan to tell on himself, or catch him in a lie. Just watch the movie again, you'll see what I mean.

Leo de Caprio is a mole from the police. He's the good guy pretending to be bad and Matt Damon is the mole from the mafia acting like a good cop.
Yes, a morbid movie as only the character of Mark Wahlberg gets to live.

It depends what mole you are talking about. Matt Damon was the mole for Jack Nicholson and Leo Dicaprio was the mole for the police trying to find the mole helping Jack Nicholson

DiCaprio was an undercover cop in the gang and matt damon was a cop but was helping out the gang. But it turns out Costello was really an fbi informant. so dicaprio and brown tries to arrest damon but barrigan comes and kills them. then damon kills barrigan to try to keep his secret. then the sergeant, dignam i think, waits at damons house and kills him.
