This is supposed to be solved as a quadratic equation. Isolate the equation on one side, factor, then use the quad formula. I am lost on the formula during the square root part. 6+/- (square root symbol) 44/2.

2(x + 4) + 2x = x(x + 4)
2x + 8 + 2x = x² + 4x
x² = 8
x = ±√8
x = ± 2√2

As stated above, this answer does not need a radical sign. Are you sure you meant to type fraction bar? If so, then move the 4 to the left by subtraction. This leaves1/x plus 1/x on the left and minus 3 and a half on the right of the equal sign.. Then combine the two fractions with the x. This gives 2/x on the left. Then multiply both sides by x. The
'x's on the left will cancel, and you have 3and a half x on the right. (or 3.5x) .Then divide everything by 3.5. The left side will result in .57143. the right side will cancel, leaving only a x. hope this helps.

Honey, there is no radical sign in this prob... let's start with the left side...
1/x+1/x+4... get LCD and you will get (1+1+4x)/x...
you will now have the eq...
(2+4x)/x=1/2... multiply both sides to 2x... you will get
2(2+4x)=x... simplify and combine similar terms...
4+8x-x=0; you will get
7x=-4; then value of x is -4/7...

1/x +1/(x+4) =1/2
(x+4+x)/x(x+4) =1/2
(2x+4)/x^2+4x=1/2
x^2+4x=4x+8 [by cross multiplication]
x^2=8
x=+-2sqrt2

first
1/x(1+1+4x) = 1/2

then
(2+4x) = x/2

then
4x - x/2 + 2 = 0

hope this helps.
