Credit the authors and put it in quotes or re-word it and then cite and credit the source. Long quotes are presented in block text indented from each side. Even a paper that is basically a compilation of others writing should have an introduction and conclusion and be tied together with your thoughts and conclusions.

Typically, you wouldn't write a paper by quoting word for word the entire basis of your paper. Though you might throw in a few quotes of particularly enlightening comments, usually it makes for a better paper to try to summarize most of the points you are trying to make. For example, you might say, "While it is true that in a few cases such as the above-described incident involving the ______ Police Department, corruption appears to be endemic to the entire department, most of those who have studied this issue extensively have concluded that corruption within law enforcement agencies is instead more typically a phenomenon confined to a few officers, acting in an individual capacity. See, eg., x study, y study, etc."

The only time you need to worry about potential plagiarism issues is when you either quote or even just use something first stated by another without indicating that the idea was theirs, not yours. Good luck.

You're paper can contain some of other peoples writings, but not the entire paper.

Plus you need to follow some rules.

1. If it's their words, put it in quotations.

2. After using their words cite behind the text.
example: "The sun is hot." (Smith, 22) (last name, page #)

3. Give a Bibliography or Works Cited page for everyone you cited and everyone or book you referenced. Even if just once.

4. Don't always write word for word. You can paraphrase, as long as you cite them for their work.

5. When in doubt. Cite them anyways.

Only if you cite your source is it not considered plagiarism. Do that and you are not committing plagiarism. Use quotation marks when citing references to show it is not what you said, but taken from the speech of another.

Definition
Lets start with a definition:

Plagiarize \'pla-je-,riz also j - -\ vb -rized; -riz·ing vt [plagiary] : to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (a created production) without crediting the source vi: to commit literary theft: present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source - pla·gia·riz·er n
What to do
Now what does this mean for you?
There are different methods for doing this. The important thing is that the reader can tell what is yours, and what is someone else's.
For short quotes, use quotation marks in the sentence.

If you write parts word for word, they need to be quoted and cited within the essay.

If you paraphrase, be careful. When paraphrasing, you cannot copy the exact words OR sentence structure of the original work. You have to completely reword it, but make it say the same thing in essence. If you can't do this, just directly quote everything. You still have to cite paraphrases within the essay.

If your copying another's quote, just pre-head your writing with -Quote- then add words. Also put conversations on ", and give a thank you to appropiate authors at end of your piece.
