My lawn is being taken over by weeds (Weeds now cover nearly 25%). I also have a few small patches where the grass is dead. What can I do in the fall to kill the weeds fix the holes and help the grass?

Preferably with minimal effort and without spending a lot.

I would recommend applying Scotts® Winterizer™ With PLUS 2® Weed Control now AS LONG AS YOU DON'T LIVE IN THE DEEP SOUTH (it kills Bermuda and St. Augustine grass, which only grows in frost-free areas). It's available from the box stores - Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart - for about $15. Next spring, your grass will look great and you won't have to deal with dandelions and broad-leafed weeds. In the spring, your lawn may look patchy if it really was 25% weeds, but that will be easy to fix. Buy a few bags of Patchmaster or Bare Spot Repair seeds ($3-5 each), toss them on the bare spots, water them, and you're done.

Autumn is the time to add lime to the lawns. Sprinkle some lime and water it in. lawn fertilizers make the soil acid over time. Adding lime fixes that. lime wouldn't cost u that much.
Before u do that, you can aerate your lawn soil for the bestest of results. This basically means poking holes in the the lawn to loosen the compact soil. this helps the lawn to breathe and uptake nutrients better. this can be done with a garden fork. Some garden shops have special shoes with lots of nails in the sole. you just walk over the lawn to aerate it.
bare spots can be fixed with a little garden soil sprinkled with grass seed (pretty cheap). or u can transplant some roots from other areas. Fertilize your lawn at the onset of spring.

To kill the weeds, either spray it with a weed killer specifically for lawns. Or if u are environment sensitive like me, then take a knife and dig each one up(call the troops to help out!!). Or sprinkle each one of them with urea (sulphate of ammonia). This will burn them.

That's all u need to do(other than mowing of course!!) to have a happy lawn year round.

it really depends on the type of lawn you have, you would handle the situation different for every grass just about.

Let me know what you started with(type of grass) and I'll be glad to help.
