Why did Paul Simon really hate Art Garfunkle?

Hello Rammie!

I don't believe it was ever hate - they'd known one another since grade school and eventually got a bit sick of one another. I believe it hurt Paul's ego that he didn't get the full credit for penning the music and lyrics to ALL of the songs and that may have built up some resentment while he was still young. It is true also that Paul felt quite lonely when Art went off to do a movie (Catch-22). He writes of his loss in two songs on the Bridge Over Troubled Water album; "The Only Living Boy In New York" (my absolute favorite song of all time, bar none) and "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright". The latter was named so because Artie had always wanted to be an architect. (Nugget: Paul almost became a professional baseball player - awesome catcher). He certainly never hated Art. In some ways I thank Art for going off to do his (wonderful) movie... without that I doubt Paul would have penned "The Only Living Boy". I heard it long before I knew what it was really about and no song has ever moved me to such depths. This video has the song but there is not actual video - still, any way it can be heard is fine with me. Just sit back with your eyes closed and listen. I had just turned 16 when I heard this. I interpret it in a way that fits my own life, as most do when it comes to the songs they love. Just to let you know, "Tom" is Art Garfunkel (when they were young they called themselves "Tom & Jerry"), and the "fly down to Mexico" line has to do with where the film was being shot. I think little of this when I hear the actual song - all I know is that it was exactly what I felt like when I first heard it as a teen and it just about saved my life:

"Tom, get your plane right on time.
I know your part'll go fine.
Fly down to Mexico.
Dotin-doo-do-n-dootin-dotin-doo-do
And here I am,
The only living boy in New York.

I get the news I need on the weather report.
Oh, I can gather all the news I need on the weather report.
Hey, I've got nothing to do today but smile.
Dotin-doo-do-n-dootin-dotin-do-do
The only living boy in New York

Half of the time we're gone but we don't know where,
And we don't know here.

Tom, get your plane right on time.
I know that you've been eager to fly now.
Hey-yyyy, let your honesty shine, shine, shine now
Dotin-do-dotin-do-dotin-do
Like it shines on me...
The only living boy in New York,
The only living boy in New York.

Ah, this is indeed a subject I am passionate about! Artie & Paul definitely had their problems before and after they were a duo, but if you want to see real love and talent between two men get yourself the video for the 1981 Simon & Garfunkel Concert in Central Park. I guarantee you'll love it. I saw Paul's other Central Park concert in '91, front row, just after I graduated my junior year of high school. An apparition of me actually appears during the Boxer! *Sighs like a schoolgirl* And GRACELAND! Get the Graceland video- you'll understand.

Kayne & Cat Eyes have got it, and VC & 2ndChapter - ROTFL!! How right they are. Dang. VC's kind of deserves best answer but... nah, I'm better. ;-)

People who have been taught over-indulgence, typically have issues with inability to properly evaluate their own desires. Your parents probably wanted to give you things in your childhood that they didn't have, because not having things they wanted made them feel deprived as children. And, instead of making you happier than they were, now you have issues that typically lead to serious financial difficulties in adulthood. Next time you believe you want something, try evaluating whether or not that particular thing is a short-term or long-term want. Begin to keep a list of those things you think you want. Post your list in a place where you'll see it every single day. Make a decision not to acquire anything that hasn't been on your want-list for at least 3 months. The exercise will surprise you by showing you that wanting something today doesn't mean you'll still want the same thing next Tuesday. I think it's admirable that you're questioning this. Sorting it out now is going to help you a great deal down the road. Good luck.

I guess they had a tumultuous friendship over the years but the main resentment seemed to come when the pursued an acting career and both got parts in the movie Catch 22 but Simon's part got cut from the movie. Oops. That would surely make for a little contention, I guess. Fame isn't a good thing. It seems to bring more problems than happiness. That's my take on it. Here's something about it at the bottom of this wikipedia article about them.

Art always wanted to be Paul's "Bridge over troubled water" but Paul was more of the New Bohemian type.

They don't hate each other! They had disagreements and parted ways. They are long time friends, in fact they were high school classmates. ~~~They've had several reunions with more planned.
added....sorry, don't believe Wikipedia as fact...besides they both have huge egos, it's not about hate.
