Why should your interest in philosophy be weird?

If you're just interested in learning some basic history and concepts, I recommend a book called "Sophie's World" by Jostein Garrtner. I read it recently and think it's a good and fairly easy introduction for someone with no formal philosophy background.

It's a novel about a 14 year old girl who starts (in a very strange way) getting philosophy lessons from an unexpected person. It's written for high school students. It's an interesting story that walks through the main philosophical events/movements in history, and the major philosophers and their ideas.

It's very interesting, and I suspect you'll like it.

Give it a try!

Liking to take classes on philosophy doesn't mean you will be socially isolated from other people. Many educated people understand concepts brought on by earlier philosophers such as Anaxamander, Aristotle, all the way up through DeCartes, Sartre, Kirkegaard, and Locke. Many of their ideas of social interaction, political systems and theories about God and Science are relevant today.

Finding that you enjoy a particular area of study is a good thing and you will find others who feel the same way. Myself, I loved learning about "ideas" and so it came natural to me because human behavior is interesting.

I think though, in the long haul you may wish to only minor in philosophy, because realistically what kind of job will you get with a major like that? Just check out your options and cover your behind. Your ultimate goal is to learn about what you're interested in, and end with a degree in something that can get you a job as well, this is of course if you decide to go further with this into college. :) Good Luck.

I took intro to philosophy freshman year in college, and HATED it... I only passed because we were assigned work partners, and mine understood everything, I didn't. I needed to take another philosophy class, which I avoidedas long as I could, but senior year, I took a philosophy class on death and dying, and I LOVED it... I realized that it wasn't philosophy that I had a problem with, it was my professor.

Soo... if you have a good teacher, and are interested, you should do well, like, and understand everything.

Philosophy is not capable of being understood.
Some concepts are so large that humanity in it's entire existence may never understand the entire concept. Philosophy is one of these large concepts. It is possible to understand some thought that comes up in the study of Philosophy but Philosophy is something to spend a life on. One will never complete the study. If you enjoy it you may have found something that can be part of your entire life.

Yes. They will be treated differently. They will experience awkwardness and social isolation. If you are not afraid of this, you will enjoy it greatly.

Of course, philosophy is a great way to spend time alone and engage in thinking.

I'm only a junior, and I like it too. It means you're smart, and there is absolutely nothing with it.

If you mean weird as in probability, then yes. It is very weird, but very cool. And good to know I'm not alone. Though I only play with it, I'm not serious about it.

No, just be careful you don't pop their binary blather bubble. Most profs and students are not pleased when their entire structure sags and crumbles.

Not at all, it's a 'flip ski touchdown.' Really cool.

EDIT: LOL, thanks guru! Writers spend a lot of alone time, too...
