4 year old toilet, the brand is Bemis. When I looked at the attaching hardware for the toilet seat, I turned a round nut (?) counterclockwise (it had a single flange on it) 10-12 turns and nothing happened. What am I missing?

As you can tell, I’m not an experienced home repair person. Thank you for all your assistance.

On the top, the screw (flip up the little plastic cover to get to this) should have a screwdriver slot in it. You just need to hold that firmly in place while turning the nut. Might need an extra set of hands to help, as it sounds like it might be slightly stuck since the nut doesn't come off easily.

With the seat down, look behind where the seat is attached. You should see smooth plastic covers that can be lifted. Under here you'll find the top of the bolts that hold the seat on. They were probably turning when you turned the nut underneath. Hold the bolt with a screwdriver and turn the nut underneath. It should come lose.

The two answers above mine pretty much tell the story. It is a simply job, now that you know to open up the plastic cover and stopping the screw from turning.

good luck.
