does the team with the best record play the team with the worst record in the first round.... or does the team with the best record play the wild card winner in the first round?

The three division champions (per league) are seeded 1, 2, 3 based upon season record -- tiebreaker methods exist if necessary. The wildcard team is seeded 4th regardless of its record.
Division Series pairings are 1-4 and 2-3, unless the wildcard and the #1 seed are from the same division. In that scenario, the pairings are 1-3 and 2-4. The higher-ranked seed gets homefield for Games 1, 2, and 5. (The wildcard never gets HFA.)

There are 3 divisions. There will be three divisional winners. There will also be a "wild card" winner. That would be the team with the best record among second place finishers. The Two teams with the best records who've won their division will play a series. The third team will play the "Wild Card" team. The "wild card" team will not play a team in their own division. The winner of the first series will play the winner of the second series in the League Championship series. The winner will play the other leagues champion in the "World Series".
