I think you will find racist people where ever you go. Alabama, Michigan, Illinois, California, New York...it doesn't matter. There are all kinds of people and they live in all kinds of different places.

Unfortunately you will always run across this issue of people assuming that the southern states are racist. I live in South Carolina and I hear the same comments when I travel. It's the same as southerners tend to think people from New York are rude when in fact its just a different culture. People have the tendency to judge others ( everyone does me and you included) and unfortunately most of the time its unfair. As long as you yourself are not racist than you shouldn't let it bother you, because in the end you only have to be happy with who YOU are and who really cares if someone in CA thinks your racist. You will never change their beliefs so there is no point in worrying yourself over it.

Nicely put.
I've lived in Alabama for 54 years(50 years ,4 yearsin the military).
And honestly there is no more racism here than any where else in the country.

I was born and raised in Georgia...
...so I can kinda relate to your frustration. Look, there are gonna be folks who feed into the stereotypes. All you can do is just not worry about it. I know that Ala./Miss./Ga. is a New South, and have come a long way when it comes to race relations. Matter of fact, I've witnessed and experienced more prejudice in North Carolina...I'm a product of the Georgia education system, so I know the South has taken major strides in that area as well.
"What they really know about the DIRRTY SOOOOUTH?!?!"

I have to agree with you. For some reason, people think we're that way, yet we aren't. I'm a Cherokee woman, originally from TN, who never really experienced racism until moving to Connecticut. I never thought I'd be asked if I was "in on the casinos" so often! They really don't like Native people in Connecticut...then again, if you're not Italian you don't matter in much of the state.

It's nice to know about what you mentioned in Alabama. I traveled around this country and I had some run-ins. You have to know there are different cultures existing here.
Racist usually despise different kinds. It's pathetic. For example, a white waitress who makes $30,000 a year discriminates a black CEO who makes $500,000 annually. Racists are simply obnoxious.

I honestly doubt the over 6 billion people on this planet think Alabama is racist.
As for your rant, everyone has different experiences and everyone will continue to have their own opinion about Alabama.

Yes it is.
But not as bad as it was in the 60s. My Parents were born and raised in Birmingham, but they left because of the blatant racism.
