Lets start even more basic than that.
|7-8| = |-1| = 1
7-8 = -1

|3-10| = |-7| = 7
3-10 = -7

|10-3| =|7|=7
10-3 = 7

|20 - 3| = |17| = 17
20-3 = 17

Do you see a pattern?
Now if you let pi = 3.14 then pi sqaured is 9.869604401
Now in your case if you subtract 10 from pi squared you end up with a negative number. Look at the examples above. What happens to a negative number if you take the absolute value of it?
You should be able to answer your question now.

No.

The value of pi is about 3.14. If you square that number, you get 9.8596. It will never get to 10, no matter how far you stretch the decimal.

So, if you subtract 10 from 9.___, you get a negative number, no matter what. The absolute value will always be positive. So no, they aren't the same.

The answer to the question is no.You evaluate the inside equation first then take the absolute value. The absolute value is removing a negative sign if it's a negative result. If it's positive, then you just take the value, no change.
