Hmmm....lets see. solo artist at local or national clubs, (all-expenses-paid, including meals) hotels, affairs, parties, etc......producer (you get to pick and book everyone for recording sessions)....songwriter for music co (you get salary, but usually, as a newcomer, you lose rights, and keep credit)...manager (handle and book ((through agent)) others), publicity agent (small bands love you, and it's a great way to make contacts)...start a label (join forces with other talented people..you don't need a studio, you book one)...money-(wo)man (believe it or not, with the tiniest bit of education on the subject, raising money is easy)...label artist...tough field, but computers are the great equalizer. Musicians have a way of matching art with music, for some reason).................................etc............etc.
Best book? To see who does what, and for how much, get "This Business of Music". It is written by Shemel and Krasilovsky, and has been updated every year for the past 34 years, that I know of. Then, once you have some idea which direction you're more interested in, look into the school the poster above mentioned, or one more suited to your interests.
Good luck!

I go to college at Ferris State University, and there's a program here called Music Industry Managment. It's a really popular major here. I'd check it out if you want to do something music related.
