Why did Ellen love Newland in the age of innocence?

This is not for an assignment /homework - ive just read the book and love the film and dont get why she she does?

Good question. It is never made clear, as far as I have been able to gather. Newland seems to represent everything that is alien to the passionate, non-conforming Ellen who spends her life railing against society. It has always been a puzzle to me, too.
