Wha is the green glow in the water?

Question

I have noticed it in the ocean before but what is that green glow that apears when you agitaite the water? I live on a brackish river and went out to cheack on my fishing poles tonite, when i realed it in i saw that the water was glowign green when i splashed it, what is that?

It's caused by photoplankton in the water. Also known as 'green glowey stuff' ☺

Noctiluca scintillans, a dinoflagellate phytoplankton (I like the way some people call it photoplankton because it emits light). This is also called "red tide" because in the daytime, it gives the water a reddish hue. At night it glows when the water moves. I have seen bloom so intense that, when I walked along the waterline at night, my footprints would glow briefly in the wet sand.
There are a number of species causing red tides, not all of which glow at night. Some are very toxic to fishes and marine mammals, and make shellfish toxic to eat in the area. Some of them stink.

i do believe its photoplankton,
because for some reason it gives off a green glow when you look in the water, and since there is thousands of photoplankton in a small area of water,they group together so the glow will be stronger in some areas then others, based on how it went together

I think that's zooplankton. I've herd stuff about the water around Vieques Island, near Puerto Rico, which has the phenomenon of glowing water. It's incredibly cool; u jump in, & the water starts glowin'!

the green stuff is algae! its a type of fungus in the water!
