You can't really stop stretch marks... you can use lots of lotion.and by keeping your skin moisturized that can help deminish their appearance...but who knows you might not get them..Not everyone does.... But I would NOT spend alot of money on Supposed stretch mark creams.. they are NOT proven to work.. Here is a link regarding Stretch Marks.. I hope this helps..
http://www.expectantmothersguide.com/library/pittsburgh/stretch.htm
And as for Tanning.. NO I wouldn't risk it..BUT check out these links..
EDIT!!!! I just read farther down on the first Tanning link.. I had forgotten about this.. But if you are worried about Stretch marks.. Than you probably don't want to get in the sun much either... You are more prone to get Dark Patches on your skin... And more than likely those would be on your face and other places that you can't hide...

There is nothing to eliminate stretch marks. There is no miracle healing cream to prevent them. The amount, size, and severity of stretch marks depend upon your own skin's elastictity. Genetics also play a huge role in this.
And no to tanning. MOst doctors recommend against things such as hot tubs, saunas, or other things that raise your body temperature *tanning included* because it could cause negative effects on the baby. Also (and I found this out the hard way), you are more prone to burning as your skin is more sensitive...and I don't just mean a sunburn! I went to the beach while pregnant, and applied sunscreen to everywhere but the tops of my feet. I ended up with sun poisoning and could not walk for three days and was in an excruciating amount of pain. Check out a sunless tanner, or a lotion with a small amount of tanner in it :)

I kept rubbing my skin with cocoa butter lotion. It worked for me. I would not advise going into the tanning salon while pregnant. It would expose the baby to undue risks. I don't even think its safe to use sunscreen while pregnant. There is too much chemicals that we are exposured to already. Its better to stay inside and stay cool for the baby. Wear a hat if you must go outside.

You could use alot of belly butter and still get them, there is no real way to prevent stretch marks. My sister used all sorts of creams all through her pregnancy and still got them.
And it's not really recommended.

i think stretch marks have more to do with your genes than how much lotion you slather on yourself. if your mother has pretty bad stretch marks chances are good that you will have some, too, but putting the lotion on wont hurt.
