Bryce may have a point but I do not have time to hunt down multiple versions of this question...

YES - - - -

and it is due to many factors. The most dramatic being Holland which was lagrely swamp coastal sand dunes and water // ]] ]] Yes Dykes (the sort that hold back water)......

Erosion and the Silttng up of Rivers. Several Belgium Cities were once Sea Ports and are now Inland....

Canal Crazy - - - around 1700 man began planning BIG canal Projects most of which were only attempted in the 1800 and 1900 hundreds by Common/Christian Reckoning.... This altered a lot of areas especially the Industrialize Rhurh and Rhein and Loirie River Valleys...

Swamp Reclamnation much as Washington DC rose from a Swamp so did Berlin in Prussia in Germany and across Germany and Poland vast swamps were drained or as they said it (not me) reclaimed for Man/Woman's Use.. Many Major Cities are built upon ground that industrious sorts broke to their will. Edingburg Scotland is an excellent example. Hills were leveled and bridged to create level roadways and places for commerce & industry changing the surface of the Earth,

And in various coastal areas Sand Dunes have swallowed up tows but again Scotland had the best examples...

Oh and finally St Petersberg Russia 'reclaimed' from swamp & harsh frozen soil/////\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Peace.........................

The only differences I can think of are 1. the shape of the Zuider Zee in the Netherlands.
I believe it was much smaller before great floods in 1421 or thereabouts.
Today, of course, its shape has been changed again through reclamation.
2. The Straits of Messina between italy and Sicily were narrower before the earthquake of 1738.

How many places are you going to post this question?

I pretty much gave you the definitive answer someplace else, something about polders and dikes.
