Do a web search for setting up a home dedicated server, If you're doing a windows server then you will need to buy a version Windows 2000 Server.. which is Pricey

If you do a Linux Virtual Server you can get it free, and all the tutorials on how to set it up,, Linux puts Microsoft server to shame, Building a virtual server you can still run windows on the same system simultaneous ... With Linux you will get all the server software and programs to run you're server all for Free from the web link below.. there are several versions of Linux

First you need to find out if the software that you are using needs more than 1 license. A lot of programs that are network capable have a network version of the software available; meaning you might have to purchase more licenses in order to be able to share the data file. The computers need to be in the same workgroup with file and print sharing enabled. Whatever you deem as the "main" computer, find the data file and share it. This can be different depending on the software. Contact the vendor on specific instructions on how to share the information on your network. A server is a GOOD option to do this but it is not mandatory. Remember also to have a backup solution in place.
