you may have been in an old house.
We do tend to have some bigass cockroaches in houses that collect water under the slab.
It's simple. call the pesticide company and take steps to make the home dryer.
I've been living in my house for 3 years and I have picked up 3 huge cockroaches.....but no small ones. I can live with that.
also, we've had A LOT of rain this year.
...he he, I think most people know the diff. between a cricket and a cockroach. If you don't, then a real cockroach is going to be really nasty to you.

I've never seen more than a couple roaches ever outside. If you live in a house and keep it clean, you shouldn't have a problem at all. The only time I've ever had a problem with them was when I lived in a cheap apt. complex and it didn't matter how clean I kept my place, since my neighbors were slobs, I had problems with them as well.
Like other people have said, the bug population here boomed this summer because of all the rain and low temperatures (very uncommon).

I don't know about roaches....I don't see many of them. I don't know where you were when you saw them.
But I do know there are tons of crickets in the area this time of year. And I mean TONS. They can cover walls and streets at night and make them look black (assuming the street was gray to start with). That "crunch" under your feet...well, it's not snow. This year, we had a "bonus" round of crickets (one round in the summer (unusual), and one in the fall (usual)).
They do go away after 5 or so weeks and things return to normal. Go ahead and move to Austin, you get used to them.

First, like everyone else has said, it was crickets. They have been bad this year because of the rain.
Second, roaches are part of any humid and mild climates (such as Austin). I used to live in Colorado and you had to be really dirty to get them, but in Texas you have to really watch out; however, it isn't as bad as Florida. We always have roach poison/traps under the fridge and toilets to try and stop them from moving in.

Yeah, those aren't cockroaches, they're crickets. We get infested every year about this time, although they've come early this year because all of the rain that we had this summer.
I found this on the Austinist, and thought it was amusing:
The recent cricket invasion is due to the massive amount of rain we have received this summer. The more rain, the more fresh vegetation; the more fresh vegetation, the more these crickets thrive; the more these crickets thrive, the more they get. it. on. And the more of them we have to deal with.

They are very hard to control if you get infested. Just do not let your place get infested to start with.
