Fidelity, meaning loyalty. Intelligence would be the most important - except it's not a character trait,it's a biological condition, just like strong bones. Plus, there is no shortage of smart people of poor personal character. Prisons are full of them.

Honesty. Most of our personal relationships and social structures are based on trust of our fellow humans and without being sure that the person was even being honest/sincere, there would never be an opportunity for a complete friendship or romance to develop.

I look for kindness in a person first. So I guess that is important to me. But there are so many qualities that are important:
Honesty
Intelligence
Faithfulness
Warmness
Caring
Cleanliness
Responsibility
I guess I am talking of character traits mostly in what I look for in the opposite sex. But for both sexes for friendship--KINDNESS-IS NUMBER 1

Since you're talking about a character you're building for a story, it needs to be unique, but not so overly done it would cover up the story. Although in Monks case, it works pretty well. From your link, it looks like you should consider 'all' of the things they listed.

Integrity. That covers a lot. To have integrity you must have: honesty, loyalty, strength of moral fortitude, and a strong will to do what may be the hard right as apposed to the easy wrong. Integrity makes up your character.
