In Portland there are very few black people. Phoenix is a bit more cosmopolitan and I have noticed little in the way of racial tension. There is a much higher percentage of Hispanic, Native American and Asian people in the area. Like most university towns, Tempe (Home of ASU) has a more balanced racial mix and the people are friendly and outgoing. This area was once fairly segregated but has come a long way during the population explosion of the last 60 years. Most people here came from somewhere else and brought their regional values with them.

I have heard that Portland is rather 'black-people-less'. I also heard that you will get a little racism in the sense that you will get that feeling from white peple (if you aren't hanging out with just other blacks) that you don't belong there. A friend (who is white) told me (just last night) that his friend, (who is black)who is a PhD, well educated, and with a pleasant personality (he feels) had an experience in Portland. He said she was walking across a street, (well dressed) and an older white lady clutched her purse... lol

I live in Phoenix, and have seen blacks. (I come from PA though...so I am used to seeing very few blacks in life...) I must say that after 11 yrs I have experienced very few racist moments. Now, PA was another story! I have a BUCKET full of incidents I can share, but won't....

Those are my four cents.

i'm from Portland and there actually are more black people there but they just stay in one area whereas here in AZ black people are fewer and spread apart.
