If that's what they want to do, it's up to them.

While I think in general that is a good idea, seeing how Iraq is an artificial state to begin with their are two major problems.
1. Baghdad has a mixed Sunni/Shite population on the border of the two areas. It is impossible to divide the city and it will be a major headache to do a major population exchange.
2. Giving the Kurds in the north Independence (which they deserve) will set off a war with Turkey and potentially Iran as well.

If they want to divide themselves I think it would be the best solution. These people have hated each other for thousands of years. We could enforce an uneasy peace but why?
The division will have to come from the Iraqis themselves, the US cannot propose it.
We should have after the first Gulf War or even as a condition of peace following the latest round of hostilities. But I believe t would look like empire building if we did it now.

Yes, that would be the best idea since we decided to invade them. By dividing the country, everybody would live in peace and harmony. Each community would keep to itself and prosper. This idea would spread across the Middle-East and all the different factions would have their own society and peace would reign.
It's such a great idea, maybe we should consider doing it here, in the United States!

No, we shouldn't. Iraq is going through some tough times right now but partitioning will only perpetuate the strife for generations to come. It looks like a quick fix but quick fixes do not always hold in the long run.
The best thing to do right now is to change their government from a parliamentary system to the American Presidential/Congressional model. In the current Parliamentary system, one side takes control of everything.
This is OK for a more homogeneous state like the UK but not for one with deep social cleavages. In the American model,
opposing sides have to work together in order to get anything done. It will take generations to take hold but will be the best in the long run, for them and for us.

If that's what they want, but I don't really see how it will be much different than it is now. Dividing up the country isn't necesarily going to end the strife between them all. It seems like they will still be fighting and trying to anihalate each other.
We were supposed to be bringing them peace, and freedom.... this just doesn't seem like much of a solution.

Why not? That seems to be the best way for peace in the region. I think you have a great idea there.

It is their country, they should be allowed to divide it how they will, it is not our say.
