Any ideas on how we can learn something about Hispanic, specifically Mexican heritage?

Ha ha, "I'm in America now"!

My daughter's father is Mexican, but doesn't know anything, and doesn't speak Spanish. I would like her to know her heritage.

Are there really kids selling gum with no shoes? Wow, and billions are still going to Iraq and Israel. Don't get me started.

Mexico's Independence Day is tomorrow (16 de Septiembre) so a little history lesson may help. There may also be some Hispanic or Mexican-oriented fests happening in your area so try attending one with your daughter.

P.S. Yes, there are barefoot little kids selling "chicle" across the border. In fact, when I was in El Paso some time ago, people would throw coins across the river to the little kids on the Juarez, Mexico side. (I don't know if they still do it anymore.)

Since Halloween is comming soon how about what they call "Day of the Dead". Sorry can't remember what it is in spanish. But it is kinda like Memorial Day at night. Really neat. I went to a celebration in S. Texas when I lived there and it was neat. I think the month they celebrate it in is Oct or Nov.

You could start with the area of Mexico your family's from. I'd start with the indigenous people of the area first, as Mexico has a very rich history before Europeans came.

Usually there are many urban Hispanic groups that have celebrations and educational presentations on various Hispanic cultures, as well as any nearby colleges or universities. I know my university has many educational presentations during this month. Check it out! Hispanic cultures are amazing, have fun! :)

Depending on where you are, maybe you two could learn a Mexican folk dance and perform it at a community center or something.
