Of course you can be proud of being french, and especially being born there. You should never be ashamed of your nationality based on what france as a Country has acheived or not acheived, but the French culture, people and language is something you can be proud of. The history France has is amazing.
France was one of the founding fathers of European integration as the continent sought to rebuild after the devastation of World War II. France's colonial past is a major contributing factor in the presence of a richly diverse multicultural population.
France has produced some of the continent's most influential writers and thinkers from Descartes and Pascal in the 17th century, through Rousseau and Voltaire in the 18th, Baudelaire and Flaubert in the 19th to Sartre and Camus in the 20th.
In the last two centuries it has given the art world the works of Renoir, Monet, Cezanne, Gauguin, Matisse and Braque, to name but a few.
It is also famous for its strong culinary tradition. France produces more than 250 cheeses and some of the world's best-loved wines.

Unfortunately , there`s nothing France has done that can be considered anything to be proud of . There`s plenty though , that France has to be ashamed of .
If you still live in France , ask some of the real old-timers about the "Vichy" government in the 1940`s and the French citizens'
eagerness to be a part of it .
That alone will prove my point .

God no...the French could possibly be the most undeservedly arrogant group of people on the planet. True throughout history also..
Art was stolen from the Italians, language borrowed from the Romans, music stolen from the Germans.
Marie Antoinette was quite the character, but of course she wasn't French at all...she was Austrian.
Napoleon was a interesting, motivated sort...whom the French promptly exiled to a crappy island in the Med.
Lafayette helped us Yanks in our Revolution...but he had to come here to make a name for himself militarily. The French couldn't fight a war to save their lives...
Of course the "piece de resistance" is World War II. The French surrendered to Hitler faster than you can say Quiche Lorraine. Then promptly turned into the biggest group of Anti-Semitic collaborators this side of Dusseldorf. That alone should make you find try to find an Irishman somewhere in your heritage...pin your geneology on that.
Ya know why the French planted all those beautiful trees on the Champs Elysees ? Because Germans like to march in the shade.

There is one thing...
The French helped America win its independence from England. Lafayette was a very very wealthy man from France and he spent all of his money every penny to support America. Then you guys gave us The Statue of Liberty. We returned the favor in WWI and WWII.

Some superb food and wine, and a pleasant place which has been kept nice in spite of the tourists. Not an inconsiderable accomplishment, if you think about it. Artists have always loved it, and taught that love to the world through their art.
