No, speed of externa is limitted by USB2 or Firewire B. External HDD is convient to move it anywhere you want without the hassle of installation, however, speed performance is a lot slower compares to internal HDD. Furthermore, if you have 2 drives set as RAID 0, the speed will improve even more.

Not likely, as an external hard drive is usually hooked to USB, I have seen people try to install operating systems on external hard drives and the success rate is remote.

You could do this, but some machines have problems booting from external drives and the speed is nowhere near as fast as internal drives.

Hi

The answer is no.
Either your external HDD is USB or a secondary HDD it will create another drive in my computer but it will not replace the existing storage.

Possible if BIOS supports booting from USB HDD. But then, if your OS installed on the external drive, booting is slow. It will take more than twice the time to boot because USB interface is slower than PATA or SATA. e-SATA external drive (if supported) would be a better option.

hm....since external HD's use only USB or FireWire.. and internal use IDE or EIDE. highly unlikely.
even speed of data transfer for external is better sometimes.
