How difficult is it to successfully be chosen as the college mascot after trying out...?

at a division 1 school, such as South Carolina or Georgia, Florida, etc.?

About how many people tryout for the role do you suppose?? What is required do you think to be chosen?

I think it's pretty tough, you probably have to be some what athletic, able to interact with people, be funny and entertaining, and have a lot of school spirit.

I would guess around 20 people try out on average.
