Stupidity !! actually it's ignorance but stupidity sounded better. A democracy must have an informed electorate. If the people of a democracy fail to keep vigil over there leaders there democracy will fail. It does not matter how long a history a nation has. If the people no longer care about there government then it is doomed. Today less than half the people of the U.S. vote. That says we are half way to loosing our democracy. We see today the patriot act stripping away the rights given to us in the constitution and no one even knows because know one reads the constitution anymore. Ignorance is indeed the greatest threat to democracy.

Ignorance.
Democracy is everyone having a voice and an opinion> Being uneducated (and no I don't just mean the information that is cramed down our throats in school), ignorant to what is going on in the world and just blindly going about life is the greatest threat to democracy.
For example, voting for someone just because they belong to the party that you have anyways voted for (and possibly your family has always voted for). Actually listen to what the person is saying and do the research on your own (from many different sources) regarding his/her past actions.

The greatest threat to democracy is that the wealthy have a commanding lead having their rights enforced by government.
This is because the oligarchy is perfectly content to spend what ever is required to lobby for them. The little guy has very little chance.
