Today I was at the mall waiting for the elevator. Me and 9 other people walked into the elevator. I was number 9 and as I walked in the elevator started to move up then quickly stopped. The doors closed and it went up very slow and there was a lot of vibration and noise. The capacity was 4500 lbs. And everyone was average wegiht. Can they move when the doors are open? It's a brand new mall, so I know nothing is broken down.

It sounds a bit strange, but consider that the vertical position of the elevator might be determined dynamically. Adding 9 bodies caused it to drop a little in height, and the drive mechanism just might be compensating for that.

Nowadays, injuries involving elevators are extremely rare.

If you're not carrying lots of stuff, just take the stairs. If the power fails, you're not stuck in a box.

I never heard that an elevator when down accidentally. I also had an experience one day that was horrifying. By mistake I push on the wrong button (emergency instead of Stop) It was between the 13 and the 14 floors. The elevator stopped rapidly and moved back and forth during 5 minutes which appear to me like 30 min. At one time I did not know which way I was going (up or down) I became very daisy and was horrified by the experience. As soon as I got to the floor I went back into the basement using the stairway. I did not cry but did not laughed either.

Well, I am not a man so you may think it is easy for me to say that a man should be cautious of any and all behavior. I'm not a man but I am BLACK and I'm here to say that plenty of white people need a little extra reassurance that you won't like kidnap them or something. It gets annoying but I have no problem smiling or doing something to let them know I'm not crazy. As long as they aren't offensive with their guard, it's not a big deal. It's the world we live in. Personally, I don't trust strange men period. I don't care what race you are or what clothes you have on. I don't hold my fingers up in a cross or anything but I am aware. If I'm sitting in my car and a man approaches, I, at the very LEAST, have him in my peripheral until he is gone. However irrational, I'd expect a man to understand why a woman wouldn't just openly trust some huge hulking man who they don't know. If he were to actually do something to her, the same people who insult her for being on edge, will undoubtedly call her stupid for trusting that strange man. As long as the woman isn't going overboard making him feel like he can't BE, men should be able to understand the behavior. That's what I think.

Strange. As far as I know, an elevator is basically the #1 safest form of movement (safer than walking, driving, or even flying), so I wouldn't worry about it. It's still possible that it was defective when it was installed.

i doubt it 4500 lbs is alot and 10 people would have to weigh 450 lbs. apiece. elevators have brakes that automatically stop if there is perhaps a falling elevator. because its new maybe it isnt broken in yet.

This sounds dangerous to me.
I hope you reported it as it is obviously defective.
