I worked at a place that hired a new store manager just before my seasonal employment ended (I was an Interim Asst. Mngr for the summer). Anyway, this person that they hired never worked with me and had issues with control. From a legal standpoint, there's no reason that anything negative can be said about me and the store owner has glowing things to say about me....

Anyway, when this new store manager was called for employment varification, she said some pretty awful and innacurate things about me as an employee and I was subsequently removed from the application process of a place I was hoping to be hired full time.

What can I do to stop this?

Not only is she wrong but she also has NO right to say anything about me as an employee.....UGH!

If you can verify this in writing, get the information, then go over that manager's head, to the next level of the company, and file a complaint. Threaten legal action if necessary. You will learn, that in this life, there are people who are not happy unless they are causing problems in the work place, she sound like one of those people.

Well if you used her as a reference then she does have the right to say how she feels about you as an employee. I would ask for a meeting with the owner of the store and politely tell him what happened. I would also contact the place you applied to and ask them why you were not chosen and see if it was due to your new manager's comments or due to some other issue. If it was due to your manager's comments then I would speak to whoever the owner is and lat him know about what happened. He needs to know what kind of person he has working for him. Just be sure to do it in a nice way, yet let him know how you feel. It maybe good if you use the owner as a reference and not this fool. Good luck!! =)

Get a lawyer, what she did was illegal. If you can get it in writing that you were removed because of her comments, you have an open and shut case. Please get a lawyer and pursue, too many people just let this go and that is why some empolyers just ignore the law.

Talk to the owner and let the owner know what transpired! You have the right to file a grievance.

Sue her for defamation and slander if she said false things about you. If you can prove that she lied to the manager about you and it hurt you financially, i.e. they cost you your employment, the court can award you damages.
