Huge difference
Conservatives (TRUE conservatives) favor smaller government, limited government power, a "hands-off" foreign policy, fiscal responsibility, and strengthening Constitutional protections.
Neocons favor larger government, limitless government powers, nation-building, "spreading Democracy", deficit spending, and weakening Constitutional protections.

A conservative is someone who believes that they know best what to do with their hard earned money, and that Government doesn't need it. We want tax cuts, so we can buy durable goods, which means factories put people to work to replace what was bought. ( Shades of Reaganomics)
We also believe that government should not spend more than it takes in. Government does not make money, they are a drain and only our tax dollars keep them afloat.
Most conservatives do not believe in long term welfare or taxpayer dollars supporting abortion. We believe that Social Security needs to be fixed and something done about illegal immigration without amnesty.
Neo-cons are new conservatives who dance around on the far right fringe. Many don't know what a conservative is, so they repeat what they here others say.
Whats funny, conservatives are in both parties and share many of the same ideals. I like it when the politicians change according to their location and audience. With modern communications, its hard to act Southern in the south, then talk like a Yankee in the north, without the world knowing it. Its hard to talk tax cuts in one area, then tax increases in another without it being on the news.

A neo-conservative is someone that espouses a "conservative" view without really knowing what a conservative view is. The real conservative believes in small, unobtrusive government that is fiscally and morally responsible. The conservative believes in a government that serves the people. Th neo-conservative is really just anti-liberal, or more correctly, anti-democrat.

I view the difference like this, conservative was barry goldwater, he was pro-choice, said government doesn't belong in the decision of abortion,
neoconservatives are prolife on account of their religion,
the other difference is foreign policy, conservatives while probably for the war in iraq would be for the powell doctrine, requireing many more troops and an exit strategy from the beginning,
a neoconservative was for the rumsfeld plan, a vietnam strategy that failed
thats my view and i know it will be criticized but i dont care

Conservatives try to live up to their stances. Neo-cons simply spout off slogans that they don't even know the true meanings of.
It boils down to one has character and morals, while the other is simply an empty vessel filled with words they learn from right wing mouth pieces.
Conservatives can disagree yet come together with those they disagreed with. Neo-cons simply spew venom 24/7 and live in their own reality.

"Neo-conservative" is a recently coined term. It means newly conservative. It was used to refer to Jews who were liberal, got some experience and wisdom, then became conservative.
Conservative is a political philosophy. Generally it favors less government and less spending.

Conservatives are both afraid of neo-cons(hence their rolling over and playing possum the last 6 years) and utterly fascinated by their utter disregard for all in the pursuit of power(hence their rolling over and playing possum the last 6 years).

that's what i'm tryin to find out, brother. i just posted a similar question, received some pretty darned good answers... sad thing is i'm still confused. conflicting answers, but still 'correct'
.
...i think the problem in trying to define it 'today' as applied to the US is this: it almost seems like every generation has it's different opinion as to what a neocon is... & so many people sling the term around meaning it to be an insult, or use it in an irrational manner (in my opinion). it's easy to look up a site like wikipedia and find out where the term originated, but it's gotten so distorted (heh, especially here on Y!A) & used to describe so many differing view... i don't know. i'm starring this question so i can come back to it later. if you find a good, solid definition or meaning - please msg it to me.

Now just listen to some people saying Neo-cons are Dems/Libs who got religion/pulled their heads out of their backsides, or something like that.
Okay, let's accept that theory.
And Conservatives elected them as their leaders?????
Twice????????
That makes Conservatives what?
You decide.
