I'm an anglophile Irishman, and I've read a lot about Englishness over the years. I just wanted to ask English folk, what do you think are the key traits of Englishness? And if you could name one as the most important, what would it be?

To start with, trait is a French word so we can't have that. If you are asking what distinguishes the English character? then it's understatement in all things. Not making a fuss about anything. Unlike the hot blooded tribes abroad. Italy for example.

Attic (comes from the Latin for Athens) and was a feature of classical Greek architecture. It has come down to us now as meaning the top storey of a building which contains accommodation, often partly or fully in the roof. The term Loft is sometimes used, but this is ordinarily distinguished as unfinished space. In large terraced houses, derived from classical originals, the attic storey contains the servants accommodation - usually the maids, whilst the male staff slept in the basement. They are good way of maximising the accommodation within a house for very little additional cost, and with roof windows or skylights can provide fascinating views over cities. Terms like 'garret', usually imply cheap, camped and mean accommodation, wheras rebranded as a 'penthouse' people will kill to live there. If you can get hold a book called the L-shaped room by Lynne Reid Banks, she describes moving into a top floor room in a run down boarding house, which may give you plenty to go on.

Well as a Scotsman I'd have to say losing at Rugby when you think your going to win the World Cup simply because you're English. In case anyone didn't hear the score: England 0 South Africa 36. It was a marvellous game.
The other trait they have is their sense of Britishness. The rest of the UK know who they are but they have to adopt this sense of paternal unity that reminds one of an amnesia case seeking identity.

We are quite reserved and offer help rather than hindrance. A liking for tea and Sunday roasts after a cricket match is another of our quirks. We love also to talk about our haemorrhoids.

Doggedness, stoicism, endeavour. The most important being doggedness.
From an English point of view we as a people would like to be viewed as fair, unfortunately our leaders actions have robbed us of the opportunity.

I'm English, and I have a casual arrogance that is unmatched by any other nation, I think. And it's what I think that's important, after all.
