What part of the atom does it come from?

I see you are physicists on here. Yes, individual particles of light are called photons and yes the sun does emit light (DUH!!!) but so do chemical reactions which arent nuclear reactions. Light doesnt just come from the sun!!!

Light is comprised of exactly the same stuff as the atom. Energy.
When you see that the atom IS a manifestation of "condensed" energy, it's easy to imagine that a photon is just a small chunk of this energy spat out by the particle in order to maintain it's balance....it's stable state.

That's why radioactivity happens. The photons of energy are spat out as the unstable particles try to make themselves more stable!

EDIT: Light given out by the sun is energy which is released when the particles of Hydrogen fuse together. A very different process to radioactivity, but the light is the same. It's just the energy being given off at all different wavelengths. Some visible, some invisible, and some we can only feel. (UV and Infra Red)

I thought it came from the electrons as they made quantum jumps from a higher orbit position to a lower thus giving up energy.

For example in florescent materials UV invisible photons will excite electrons momentarily into a higher orbit then they will drop back emitting a photon at a characteristic frequency or colour of light.

This happens with light hitting material, in this case the emitted photons are in the infrared or heat spectrum

K, dude this is an obvious answer, the light comes from the sun, luckily we have an ozone layer which creates an atmosphere so we don't get the full effect of the sun, thus, we don't get burnt, it does help to have sun cream on but I don't go out when the sun is shining so bright, no I'm not a vampire don't worry...yet LOL.

It is the electrons that cause this. As an atom gains energy, it is the electrons that absorb this energy, causing them, when they have enough energy, to 'jump' instantaneously to the next outer shell of electrons. The atom then gives off the gained energy as the electrons move back to their original shells, emitting a photon.
