The total distance of an ice skating course is 200 km, and the record time for covering it is 5 hours, 40 min, 37 sec.

a: what is the average speed of the race?

b: If the first half of the distance is covered by a skater moving with a speed of 1.05v (where v is the average speed found in (a), ) how long will it take to skate the first half?

a. v = d/t
= 200/(5 +40/60+37/3600)
= 35.23 m/h (rounded to two decimal places.)
b. t = d/v
= (200/2)/(1.05*35.23)
= 2.70 hours
