Is it ok instead of throwing a apple core away in the garbage can and worrying about fruit flies and stuff, to throw it down the disposal? Also just wondering, what other food items do you put down yours?

Recently I looked at the book that came with the disposal, because when visiting my sister she kept tellin me not to throw onion peels and garlic peels in disposal. I figured she was wrong. My book says don't grind fibrous materials like corn husks and artichokes. My daughter-law puts celery in her disposal with no problem. My booklet recommends small bones, ice and fruit pits(not Peach) to help scour out the chamber. Grind lemon peels to make it smell better.

HI, And in my house ,I don't know how many Disposals I've had to install (maybe 4) and it doesn't make any difference the brand, there are just some things I can't put down it. At the moment I have a ,In-sinkerater. I believe a Bager 5. I can't put apple cores, potato peels, any kind of stringy things, such as Boiling Beef,Green onion tops,or the skin of round onions. It'll clog up the sink. But I bet it's the Pipes and Drain, not the Disposal. I'm sure yours would take an Apple Core, unless the person that piped this house piped your too! Disposal are supposed to be able to take bones even. Wow, I wonder where I can get one of those! Byee

The apple core might be a little tough on the disposal. I throw just about everything into my disposal but I've learned that stringy grainy foods like celery or asparagus can really gum it up. Things that have hard pits cannot be put in and I don't ever put meat/fat products in it.

You can throw almost any food down your garbage disposal. Just avoid throwing "stringy" things down as this can really cause problems. (Like celery)

Almost anything except stringy stuff like celery.
