By train you have the choice between traveling high speed trains with a surcharge, changing once, or normal trains changing 2 times, ( the other direction it takes 5 changes and then it is worth looking into the cost of the surcharge.)

It takes about 51/2 hour by fast and 61/2 hour by normal train. For each possibility there are several connections per day.

A cheaper option will by the bus:

That will take about 9 hours. Only one or two per day. Might well be an overnight trip, so check the time table before buying the ticket.

From Stuttgart Airport, you can take Royal Dutch Airlines. It takes about 1 hr and 30 minutes from Stuttgart Airport to Amsterdam airport. As of now, it cost EURO191. However, airline tickets prices changes now and then. You have to check often and confirm with the airline or the agents. You can also look out for last minutes deals.

So, to travel via Air or Land, depends on your budget taking inconsideration of TIME as well. Sometime while budget may be a consideration, TIME is also precious. You travel by LAND, you save on budget but you lose TIME. Do a trade off analysis.

The others have given good advice already. For me personally I'd take the plane if I can't spare the time. Otherwise I prefer the train as I get to see a bit of the landscape. I'd take the bus if it needs to be cheap but it's not really that comfy.
