Well the shirt CAUSES nothing. ;)

What it costs...
48=2x+6
42=2x
21=x

twenty one bucks

Easy!
I'll show my work ( / is divide)
48 - 6 / 2 = 42 / 2
42 / 2 = 21

And check your work is...
21 x 2 + 6 = 42 + 6 = 48

So your answer is 21

let s = the price of the shirt that goes with it

48 = 2s + 6

42 = 2s

21 = s

The shirt that goes with it costs $21.

The shirt should cost $21.00....the best way to determine that is to use the info at your disposal : subtract the $6.00 from the cost of the $48.00 sweater, then divide the remaining price in half....or $21.00.
