why did the hessians fight for the british?

it is one of my school questions..but i cant seem to fin an answer..
was it for money? or like power? aha..

The Hessians came from Hesse. The British paid the Margrave of Hesse to "rent" his troops for the war in America. It was an obvious thing to do. George III was related to the Electors of Hanover. German was the language at court until after the reign of Victoria. German was her first language. She never spoke English without an accent.

It was for money. The Hessions were mercenaries.

However, they also had a social interest. The concept of a democracy was foriegn to the general social order of European countries (outside of England which had a resentative element to the government) and historically there was a tradition of empire building with Spain and England. While Germany didn't enter a period of empire building until the 1800's, colonialism was kind of a gestalt of the time. It was the economic engine of the European powers and the aspiration of other nations.

For the Hessions, they got paid well (others hired them, too) and had no quibil with the reason for the war.

They weren't fighting for England. They were fighting for King George, a German who was the third of the name (and line) to sit on the British throne. The previous two Georges didn't even bother to speak English.
